This photo was taken in Youngstown, Ohio. I arrived at sunrise and the lighting was difficult but I concentrated on getting the highlights knowing I could open up the shadows in lightroom . Nikon is known for its amazing dynamic range and my Nikon D600 did not disappoint me. I used a 24-70mm lens at 24mm, 0.6 sec. F22, ISO 80, 10/26/15 at 7:35AM

“Curious Coyote” by Jim Heern
The coyote appears often in the tales and traditions of Native Americans—usually as a very savvy and clever beast. Modern coyotes have displayed their cleverness by adapting to the changing American landscape. These members of the dog family once lived primarily in open prairies and deserts, but now roam the continent’s forests and mountains. They have even colonized cities like Los Angeles, and are now found over most of North America. Coyote populations are likely at an all-time high. This was taken in Idaho, while visiting my son Zack, his wife, Mona and my grandchildren, Liya and Jamal. The settings were as follows 1/100 second @ f 45 ISO 125.

“The Dragonfly” Laurie Scaruffi
The photo was taken in a friend’s asparagus garden here in Grants Pass with a Nikon D90 and a Tamron 70-300 lens. Exposure: 1/60sec, f5.6 @ ISO-320. It was hand held, and since I’m a bit shaky, I popped the flash, and it gave a sparkle to his wings. I love all kinds of nature photography and I was so delighted when the dragonfly didn’t fly away so I got a couple different pictures, but liked this one the best.
I have enjoyed photography since the mid-70’s using a 35mm film camera. I had put my camera down for years. However, when I moved to Grants Pass and joined the Camera Club, I started learning more about the world of digital photography and editing, it really became a passion again. Although I can’t physically do the things I used to, I keep my love of photography by interaction with other photographers in the Club. When I’m not able to get out and take pictures, I enjoy editing them! Best of all, I passed on my love of photography to my daughter who is now an accomplished professional photographer in Kansas.

“Tough Glove” Joel Takarsh
This photo was taken at Hidden Valley High School in May of 2015. I was on assignment for the Daily Courier newspaper and thought this was the most interesting picture I had captured all day. I feel it has a lot of qualities that I like in a sports picture. Soft background, captured action, tells a story. Good athletes make getting pictures like this so much easier.
Taken with Nikon D4 with 400mm f/2.8 prime lens.
ISO was set at 160, shutter speed 1/4000 sec., f-stop was set at 3.2 for shallow depth of field. Processed in Lightroom.

Macro is a fairly new area of photography for me. Almost immediately I identified the inherent challenge of balancing a small aperture for the desires depth of field, with enough shutter speed to shoot hand held while stalking a moving subject. Armed with a new dedicated flash for my 100mm macro lens, I was able to strike a nice balance and get the image that I had hoped for. Shooting from a low position allowed for the inclusion of an evening blue sky as a nice background for the shot. My camera settings were: 2500 ISO, 1/100 second, f/25.

I Joined the Caveman Camera Club in October of last year.
I joined because I have always been an “Green Button” auto everything shooter.
I am learning how to shoot manual thank’s to the clubs Guidance Mentor system.
I now shoot with a Canon 5 D Mark III
And would highly recommend the club to anyone wanting to advance their skills.
My Photo was taken while I was serving in the Coast Guard. It was a once in a lifetime shot hovering above the ‘North Pole’.
When we were hovering and looking down, I was so inspired looking down on the top of the world. Just can’t get any better.
When I saw the picture a couple of weeks later I was shocked that I took it. I was one of 4 crewmen taking the photos.
The picture was taken with a Very, Very small Panasonic ( 1/3 inch by 1 inch by 3 inch) pocket camera, that’s all I carried when flying. Yep, it’s off my bucket list

Marcia and I came across this abandoned looking Dutch Barn with grazing cows as we were barn-hunting along a side road outside of Rosalia,WA. I took several shots of the barn and the squashed mailbox but I liked this one the best with a close up of the cows. It really seemed to come alive in a modified ‘natural’ B&W out of Photomatix . I then took it into PS and toned down the highlight glow around the tree with a Luminosity Mask, also open up some of the very dark shadows a little bit using another Luminosity Mask on a burn/dodge layer. It has since been improved per Tim’s suggestion with a small neutral density gradient on the sky. Canon T2i, f/10. 1/160 sec, ISO 200 with my ever useful 18-135 lens set at 18mm.

“A study in Glass #1” by Dale George
After wasting many hours trying to shoot an image for the assigned category, I became frustrated with my efforts and decided to try some lighting techniques we had talked about at our last educational meeting. I built a 3 sided wall from black foam-core board scraps, lined the back and bottom in some velveteen fabric and experimented with lighting placement. I again went to my tried and true method of bracketed shots and used Photomatix to blend them. I realized it was too beautiful to use just a single exposure and no edits, so I chose to enter it fully edited in the open class. Shot with a Canon 5dMK3, Canon 100mm Macro 2.8, average exposure of .7 seconds at f/19 and ISO 2500. Also used a single Alien Bee strobe approx. 5 feet above my subject.

“Lets get Together” by Rose Christner
This image was taken during Spring Break at the Monterey Bay aquarium. Among the myriad of obstacles of children popping in a photo, there is always the “right” lighting issues in dark rooms, especially when no flash is allowed. I tried to get a decent shot with my Canon PowerShot SX20 IS, but couldn’t. So I pulled out my trusty Samsung Galaxy Note5 (cell phone) which was set on automatic and waited for the jellyfish to literally get together and used the lighting that was in their fish tanks. I was concerned about possible reflections coming off the glass as well. but standing about 3′ away helped alleviate that. As a beginner, I have a lot to learn yet. I’m so thankful for the help from all the knowledgeable photographer’s who love what they do from all their “trusty” cameras.

Last year there was a fundraiser for the Grants Pass Downs, and I was asked to take photos at the event. There was a great group of cowboys and girls who performed there. It was so much fun, and I was happy to volunteer to photograph the event. Our assignment for March was monochromatic images. I remembered this image, and thought it would be wonderful in sepia tones, because it was very fitting for their costumes. It was shot with the Canon 6D with a 24-105mm lens at 24mm, ISO 4000.

“Built to Last” Dale George
This image was taken last fall as we swung through Astoria. The Flavel house was on my list of places to stop and explore as I really love seeing a true Victorian home with period furnishings. I used a tripod on all shots taken here as lighting was dim and I wanted to shoot with a low ISO for best results. This particular shot was 3 exposures blended in Photomatix and cleaned up in Lightroom 5. There were a couple bus loads of tourists that were going through the house, but as typical, they went through quickly allowing me time to set up and get many decent scenes here. I never thought of myself as an architecture guy, but the mood and feel of scenes like this one make me want to explore other interiors like it.
And now for the nuts and bolts of it. Taken with a Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 16-35mm lens. The lens was opened to 16mm and an average exposure of 1/6 second with exposures of +2 and -2.F stop f/8 and ISO 100 for the least noise.

I liked the simplicity of this Lone Tree and its Shadow out on a barren field in the Palouse area so I made the usual 3 image capture. When I started playing with it in Lightroom, I realized that an Infrared type conversion would make it seem “other-worldly” so I brought a color version into CS6 , did the B&W conversion to a faux infrared (after rebalancing the color so that the clouds on the left would be a little whiter ) and then added a fairly strong Orton effect from an ‘Image Apply’ action that I created. I masked off some of the final sharpening and added a translucent border that enhanced the ethereal feel of the finished image. Canon T2i, using 18mm on my 18-135mm lens at f/8, 1/2000 sec. , ISO 400.

Certainly shooting sports action is a first love with me. I shot this at a Rogue River High School baseball game in April of 2014.
During the course of the game, I couldn’t help but notice how talented of an athlete the short-stop for Rogue River High School was.
I then made it a point to keep my camera on him and at a critical game saving moment, he made this back hand catch that yielded an exciting photo capture. This image was taken with a Nikon D4 mounted with a Nikon 400mm AF-S f/2.8 lens. Exposure info ISO 640, Shutter speed 1/8000 sec, f/stop 3.2. “Pea Growers” by Nomeca Hartwell
I love the look of the tall imposing granaries and silos in Eastern Washington so when we came across the ‘Pea Growers’ grain storage building in the Oakesdale area of the Palouse , I knew I wanted to spend some time with this structure. I found a way to get a really nice view of the building by crawling under a line of parked trains with my tripod and camera gear in tow and setting up inside the train yard. Afterwards I happily told my travel companion that I had gotten my ‘shot of the trip’. I made initial adjustments in Lightroom, but to really capture the magic of the scene, I ended up converting it to Black & White in Photoshop CS6 and then did a texture overlay.
Canon Rebel T2i data: 1/2000sec at f /6.3, ISO 400 , 18-135 lens at 25mm.

“Water Tanks” was taken on a trip to New York City this past summer to be used in the club’s assigned category of architecture. “Boulevard of Dreams” Dale George
Boulevard of Dreams was taken this past spring on a road trip to Las Vegas. Shooting the strip at ground level was more of a challenge than I would have thought. The height of the hotels was daunting even with my 10-22mm lens. Distortion was always an issue, so in this scene I concentrated on buildings that were not as tall, as I wanted a more straight on type of shot. Another real problem was traffic, and those cursed light poles in the median, which were always in the worst photographic location. Eventually I settled at this spot and set up the tri-pod and waited for a break in the traffic…another hazard are the buses with their light-up billboards on the side trying to ruin your shots as they speed by.
Shot with a Canon T2I (retired now) and a 10-22mm lens. Exposure at ISO 100 for .6 Sec, focal length 13mm and aperture set at f/7.1

The outer rim is the arc of the Milky Way. This image was made at Pelican Butte, Oregon, using a Cannon Mark 3, Samyang 14mm lens, at F2.8, using a 25 second exposure at iso 3200. Processed in LightRoom and Photoshop. My first attempts at astro-scape photography began in February 2015 and the learning process is on going. I am absolutely hooked and fascinated with imaging the night sky. An image that Nomeca Hartwell created when I originally became a camera club member, spiked my interest in night photography. I became a member of the camera club in September 2008. I left in June of 2011, then re-joined in June 2015. I am in gratitude to be surrounded by talented artists and the images that are produced by our club. I am retired and free to pursue my passions in life, which are sometimes dancing (after a beer or 2), wine tasting, back packing, hiking and photography. The extraordinary culmination, for me, is to combine back packing, photography, hiking and a cold beer after a long excursion on a hot trail.

“Portal of Power” was taken this past Sept. on a photographic road trip with my wife. Our final destination was Victoria, B.C. and was where I captured this scene. The photo was taken on the second floor of the beautiful legislative building which is available to explore a bit. This was shot on a tri-pod and was a bit difficult to frame properly as the camera would not tilt upward any further and was low to the floor to get as much in the frame as possible. It is another 3 shot exposure processed in Photomatix and Lightroom.
As a side note, I have been using HDR for over 2 years now and find that this technique works especially well for interior shots and does not produce the halo effect usually associated with some HDR images. This is my “go-to” technique for older interior building shots as it seems to bring life to the image.

I took this photo using a Nikon D3 with a 105mms macro lens. I enjoy taking macro shots especially in my backyard because of the quiet and solitude. I’m always amazed how calm I feel after a backyard “shoot”.

“The Swan” Debbie Jallit
This was taken last May while we were visiting family in Denmark. We were walking along the shoreline of Øresund in Charlottenlund, Copenhagen and there were several of these swans swimming along side of us. I hadn’t seen swans living in a saltwater environment before, although evidently they do, and the purity of their whiteness against the clarity of the waters were just captivating to me. It was taken mid-afternoon on a partly cloudy day with my Nikon D7000, 28-300 zoom lens at 85mm, F8, ISO 200 at 1/500 second.

“Christ Church Cathedral #2” Dale George
“Christ Church Cathedral #2” was taken in September while on vacation in Victoria, British Columbia. This was one of my “must have” shots from Victoria. We stopped in one afternoon and were welcomed and given a pamphlet with some history of the Cathedral and other historical facts on it. We had full access as long as we did not disturb any worshipers. I deposited a donation in the donation box and set out to get my shots. I had to be patient, as there was another photographer there using a mono-pod and he had gotten there first. After what seemed like an eternity, he finished and I had my turn. I kept running into this guy the whole trip at various locations, and he was always there just before we arrived at each place…very weird!!!
And now for the nuts and bolts info…. Shot with a Canon (yea) 5D Mark III and my new 16-35mm wide angle lens. As this is an HDR image, I set my camera for aperture priority and bracketed 3 shots at 0, +1, -1. Aperture f/9 and ISO 200 for an average exposure of 1/10 sec. Processed in Photomatix and Lightroom 5 only.

“Puck Lakes” Donald Tedrow
I backpacked into Puck Lakes with the intent of imaging the Milky Way and capturing time lapses of it during the night. I’m always looking for photography opportunities including wildlife, plants and natural occurrences.
I am passionately fascinated with space and all natural phenomena, and I’m equally fascinated with photography and back packing. I push myself on the trail and find ways to push my photography skills. The cathartic end is a composite of hiking the wilderness, photographing it, processing the photograph into an image that represents my vision. This allows friends, family and anyone that is interested, to enter a place that they may not have otherwise been able to experience. Visit my web site at: dondelayjonesphotography.com

“Hatley Castle” Dale George
This image was taken after sunset in Victoria, Vancouver Island. I had taken this photo earlier in the day but the lighting was awful, so I made it a point to come back in the evening to try again and perhaps get a better result. Arrived with just about 5 minutes of good light left so I quickly set up the tripod and snapped of about 4-5 sets of 5 exposures.
This is another HDR image using only 3 of 5 exposures. Exposures were blended in Photomatix and then adjustments made in Lightroom 5. A small amount of exposure increase in portions of the castle stonework were made in onOne 7.0 as well.
Some of the image particulars….shot with Canon 5DMK3, Canon 24-70mm lens. Average exposure time was 1/5 second at f/9 and ISO 100.
This image and a couple others is now why I always travel with my laptop. Had I not had the option of editing my earlier series of shots taken here earlier in the day, I probably would not have gotten this shot. It was only after editing my earlier effort that I realized it just was not going to work. Thank heavens for second chances!!

“911” was taken at the 911 museum in New York City. I took the photo of the beam from a railing, one floor above. I used my Nikon D810, with a 24 to 70mm lens, set at 33mm. The settings were, ISO 4000, F/4.0, at 1/40sec. Photoshop was used to remove projected images from the rear wall, and darken areas around the beam.

“Freedom” Linda Noles
This photo was taken recently at my home. I was inspired by the Clubs assignment of Patriotic/Love of Country. I think the basics of Patriotism lie in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The book is about this and the gun symbolizes the second amendment and Freedom. I took this with a Canon Rebel T6i with a Tamron 18-270mm lens. The camera settings were 1/20s at F/4.5, ISO 200.

“Jet Precision” is a capture of the Breitling Jet Team’s photo pass at the 2015 Reno Air Races. The Cloudless blue sky made for a ho-hum background on the shot. I used a “desaturate blues” command in Photoshop to give the subject more impact. The shot was taken with my Canon 5d MKII, using a 300mm lens and 1.4x extension (total 420mm focal length) – ISO 500, 1250th of a second, at f 5.6.

I took these photos of the Tetons while visiting my sister in Jackson Hole. I original took 9 segments, with the camera mounted in landscape, but ended up only using 6 for this panorama. I now wish I had the camera mounted in portrait. We stayed at this location for about 4 hrs. as the sun was rising. I took the segments with a Nikon D3, using a 70-200 F2.8 lens, zoomed to 75mm, 1/60th @ f/16 and camera set at 200 ISO. I created the panorama using LR CC.
